Methods of Treatment

At present there is no practical means of killing the virus once it is established in the animal. However, affected animals can be treated with topical applications of antibiotic formulations or astringents to prevent secondary bacterial infection of the lesions. A meat withdrawal period of at least twice the period stated on the product data sheet has to be observed (UKROFS, 2000). Treatment of the scabby lesions with herbal remedies may help to prevent secondary infections. Attention to feeding may prevent severe weight loss and debilitation in animals, especially in lambs having difficulty with sucking.
