Treatment is usually successful if started early. If treatment is started more than two weeks after the first symptoms or if the lesions are already "bony", the treatment is unlikely to be successful and humane slaughter should be recommended.
A veterinarian should always be involved if treatment for wooden tongue is attempted. Antibiotics are very efficacious and should be the treatment of choice for this condition.
