Guidelines on the Disease during the Conversion Period
If the herd has a history of mange problems, a plan to eliminate the disease from the herd should be part of the conversion plan.
If no mange is present in the herd and the herd history does not suggest a high risk for the introduction of mange mite infection, the routine conversion planning (implementation of closed herd policy, establishment of quarantine, health checks of bought-in animals and minimisation of communal grazing) should prevent the reintroduction of the disease. If communal grazing is unavoidable, joint efforts to control the disease with other communal grazing users should be attempted. If this fails, regular checking of the animals for signs of mange and treatment before introduction back to the farm should be carried out.
