The Condition and Welfare

Animals with an identified, chronic listerial infection (mastitis, metritis, neurological symptoms) should be slaughtered to prevent contamination of the premises and risk to other animals and humans.

In the face of an outbreak or sporadic case of listeriosis, metaphylactic treatment of in-contact animals should be considered, according to veterinary advice. If a case of listerial infection is traced back to poor quality silage, every effort should be made to check the silage currently fed and to remove any fermented or spoiled parts of it, in order to avoid further cases.
