Good Practice based on Current Knowledge

• Only feed good quality silage to cattle.
• If fermented or spoiled silage is detected in the clamp, make sure that all visibly affected material is removed.
• Check the silage with a pH-test to ensure that the value is below 5.5.
• If a case of listeriosis is suspected, a veterinarian should be involved in the investigation and in the decision making with regard to protective treatment of the in-contact animals and the fate of the affected individuals.
• If an animal suspected of or identified as having a listerial infection is sent for slaughter, the veterinarian at the abattoir should be informed of this.
