Good Practice based on Current Knowledge
Only feed good quality silage to cattle.
If fermented or spoiled silage is detected in the clamp, make sure that all visibly
affected material is removed.
Check the silage with a pH-test to ensure that the value is below 5.5.
If a case of listeriosis is suspected, a veterinarian should be involved in the
investigation and in the decision making with regard to protective treatment of the
in-contact animals and the fate of the affected individuals.
If an animal suspected of or identified as having a listerial infection is sent for
slaughter, the veterinarian at the abattoir should be informed of this.
