The veterinarian may diagnose parasitic gastroenteritis by taking a faecal sample to conduct a faecal egg count (FEC). In the case of disease, the animals have to be drenched with an anthelmintic on the advice of the veterinarian. Type I ostertagiasis can be treated with almost any of the anthelmintics currently available. Type II ostertagiasis requires the use of the modern longer acting benzimidazoles or pro-benzimidazoles or a moxidectin (Cydectin) injection, all of which are effective in removing both adult and inhibited fourth stage parasites.
