Good Practice based on Current Knowledge
- Breed cattle with a known resistance to helminthiasis, by measuring faecal egg counts in
replacement calves.
- Lower stocking density.
- Use the dilution strategy (rotational grazing of paddocks by calves, followed by older
cattle) or move calves to clean pasture at monthly intervals.
- Alternative wormers may be useful with the above-mentioned strategy.
- In the case of parasitic gastroenteritis, the animals have to be drenched with an anthelmintic on the advice of the named veterinary
surgeon.
- Type I ostertagiasis can be treated with almost any of the anthelmintics currently
available.
- Type II ostertagiasis requires the use of the modern longer acting benzimidazoles or
pro-benzimidazoles or a moxidectin (Cydectin) injection, all of which are effective in
removing both adult and inhibited fourth stage parasites.
